US Banking Regulator Issues Guidance, Warning On Spyware

JULY 24: The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp urged banks to do more to fight identity theft through computer spyware as more customers use the Internet to gain access to financial services.
The US agency, which insures bank deposits and identifies risks to the system, also recommended practices for reducing the threat from spyware, which steals security information from personal computers and banking networks.
Spyware is often attached to innocent-looking software programs, such as weather information bars, and unknowingly downloaded. Once installed inside a computer system, spyware can record passwords, user names and credit card numbers and relay them to hackers.
‘‘The information collected through spyware can be used to compromise a bank’s systems or conduct identity theft,’’ said Michael J Zamorski, director of the agency’s division of Supervision and Consumer Protection, in a statement.
