One of the largest e-commerce platforms, Canadian Shopify, reported a data breach involving 200 webshops and its customers.
An unspecified number of customers' data may have been compromised after two internal employees from Shopify, one of the largest e-commerce platforms, tried to steal the user databases and transaction records of about 200 webshops.
According to the company's blog post, unauthorized access was detected promptly, after which Shopify, in cooperation with the authorities, took the necessary steps to protect user data.
As described in the blog post, two customer service employees were responsible for data theft last week. The names, email addresses, addresses, and details of orders may have been compromised.
The company points out that credit card details and payment information was not compromised. Shopify has also begun to notify the partners involved.
Shopify immediately suspended access to the two employees after discovering unauthorized access and notified the FBI and other international authorities of the incident alongside the partners.
The company's platform is also present in some 175 countries, with Shopify reporting that data theft affected only a “small number” of accounts.
For the Canadian company, the recent data breach was rather bad timing. The company has soared so far this year, thanks to the fact that the e-commerce sector has seen a significant recovery in almost all regions due to the crown virus epidemic.
As a result, the company doubled its value this year, making it Canada's second most valuable company.
